The existing surgical suite was a glorified storage room with equipment scattered everywhere. It dawned on the design team that this is the office for the entire surgical team. We had an opportunity to give them a high-class office with high-quality materials, good lighting, and next-level touches including a writeable wall space for impromptu diagrams and surgical notes. The design team worked with the doctors and nurses that work in this hybrid operating room for two months through various layout iterations and room adjacency combinations until the right setup was achieved. At one point a full-size mock-up was built with actual surgical equipment for props, so the physicians and nurses could test the design concept. Open control area behind a shielded glass panel allows maximum visualization, interaction and communication with the full surgical staff during procedures.
